AGE: 2 DAYS OLD........INDOCTRINATION BEGINS........

funny thing.......when i told my mother that we would be going in at 6am Wed. for the induction, i made sure to tell her not to show up at 6am as nothing would be happening for hours.........she gave me her word.....Mom waltzed through the door at 6:20am.....guess i should've been more specific.....


Aidan Shane Allen was born at St. Joseph Hospital Wed. August 23rd at 8:09pm.........he was born perfect.........10 fingers 10 toes.....i know this because i counted 5 or 6 times.......perhaps just a wee bit influenced by the worrying beta male protagonist of Christopher Moore's book "A DIRTY JOB"....

7lbs14oz......20&1/4 inches long......a head full of dark hair(hence Trixie's heartburn throughout the pregnancy)......i saw the hair on his head early on and the nurses talked about how Aidan was trying to move his head to correct an unfavorable presentation........at that i made the comment "he's gonna come out spitting fire".........the fire alarm went off in the hospital as Aidan came into the world..........we hardly even noticed........but the world best be put on notice.......

THIS JUST IN!!!.......THERE'S A FRIGGIN' BABY ON THE WAY.......VERY SOON!!......

So Aidan is due tomorrow........this morning, Tracy and I went to visit the doctor(the visits are weekly at this stage)....I figured i'd best go along on this one with the baby officially at term now.......plus Tracy's now officially afraid to drive after she heard about the woman who crashed her car while driving herself to the hospital while in labor and ended up giving birth in a half submerged car in a ditch.....so that pretty much made me officially obligated to officially go to the doctor with her today......

With the pelvic exam done, he informed us that her cervix is beginning to dilate(just a cm)........and he offered us the option of induction......i'm guessing he doesn't want to risk her water breaking friday afternoon while he's on the golf course......

So that's that.........we are scheduled to arrive at the hospital tomorrow morning at 6am.......the pitocin will be cranked up and labor will begin.....so as it stands, Aidan will be born on his EXACT due date.......perhaps the OB is keeping accounts of his accuracy with regards to his due dates.....This is some exciting stuff.........i'm predicting very little sleep tonight........

So it's Wednesday night.......less than one week now until Aidan is due....this is like waiting for lift-off on the launchpad with only a vague idea when the countdown to launch might commence......i for one have been staring at the pot far too intently......waiting for the first bubbles signalling the beginning of a rolling boil........

I called Tracy at least 3 times today....."did your water break yet?"....."could that pressure in your back be labor pains"......"is the baby here yet".........like a kid on a long trip.......grrrrr.........i know we're gonna get there........but how come we haven't gotten there yet......if i had hair, i'd be pulling it out right now.......can't wait to meet you,son........

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF GENIUS........

I was thinking a lil while ago of some of the music albums i have loved over the years......you know the ones that live in your cd player for a long period of time......the ones that qualify as the soundtrack of your life....the best.....i thought i'd list some of those........who knows....all 5 of my readers might find it interesting...

1. IN A PRIEST DRIVEN AMBULANCE-THE FLAMING LIPS
I'll start with the obvious.........I've been a longtime FLAMING LIPS fan......and to me, IN A PRIEST DRIVEN AMBULANCE was their best record.......on this record, they still retained the incredibly loud guitars......buuuuttt, they had begun to discover a more pop sensibility......this one came out in 1990.......

2. END OF THE DAY-THE REIVERS
I "discovered" this band when they were called ZEITGEIST......they had to change their name due to copyright issues or some such.....i first saw them on a great show on MTV(remember when they actually played music) called THE CUTTING EDGE......they had an episode called THE AUSTIN AVALANCHE OF ROCK AND ROLL.......this band was featured prominently and i went out and bought their first album the next day.....on this(their last album), it's clear that the band is coming to an end as it's members began to address the issues of adult life(marriage,kids,etc.).....it's a real bittersweet document.......and i have loved it from the first time i heard it......should you get a chance to hear it, please ignore the cheesy 80s production values........this one was released in 1989


3. DECORATION DAY-DRIVE BY TRUCKERS
This record has been in and out of my cd player for 2 years now.......what can you say about the TRUCKERS......the storytelling makes their stuff special.....and great lyrics in general.......OUTFIT may be my favorite song on this record...."don't call what you're wearing an outfit...don't ever say your car is broke......don't worry bout losing your accent.....a southern man tells better jokes".....great stuff indeed......released in 2003

4.REVOLVER-THE BEATLES
Need i explain this one........1966

5. SEX,LOVE AND ROCK N ROLL-SOCIAL DISTORTION
A return to form for this band, this album seemed to have some of the same intensity Mike Ness exhibited earlier in his career.......it's more punk and i love it.....i believe this one came out last year......

That's a start........i think i may be inclined to list more later.....or then again, it may make more sense to list them one at a time with a more detailed reasoning for their place on the list......

WELCOME TO THE NFL,MR. SHOCKLEY........AND YOU TOO MR. NORWOOD......

I sure hope ex-DAWG DJ SHOCKLEY makes the cut with THE FALCONS........he's in a heated battle for the number 3 QB spot with VA TECH alum BRYAN RANDALL.....DJ looked good last night leading a squad of 4th stringers down the field with a little over two minutes left in the game......ultimately resulting in the game winning field goal against THE PATRIOTS in the first tilt of pre-season.....grace under pressure from the rookie......

and my goodness!!!......how fast is JERIOUS NORWOOD.......that kid is gonna be right at home in THE FALCONS backfield........he's gonna be a fine replacement for WARRICK DUNN.......who as we all know has some mileage on him.......

BIDDING THE FIELD OF BATTLE ADIEU.......for now......

Less than two weeks now until Aidan is due to arrive kicking and screaming into the world.......perhaps a world more on the brink of chaos than at any other time in my conscious awareness.........but that's neither here nor there.......the preparations have been made.......we have more baby stuff than i knew it was possible to own.....the room has a fresh new coat of paint........the crib has been assembled.......a blanket has been lovingly made by Tracy's own hand.......the diaper genie waits at the ready......so like i said.....we're ready.....

That said, I've been slowly withdrawing from the social life of downtown Augusta......over the past several months, the only times i've been out have been on the occasions i've had to play shows......now with no shows booked and none in the planning for at least the next two months, my withdrawal deepens......

I'm taking a month off from work as well to enjoy my new son........so my world is about to become very insular and family oriented.......at least for a time.......some people might find that thought frightening.....others might be comforted by it.....as one who has historically become bored very quickly with anything resembling stasis, i'm at peace with the idea......but then, there's NOTHING static about a newborn......

And of course........one can never totally withdraw from society when there is fantasy football to be played........

THE BOOTY END OF THE STICK...........

The show that was to be.............our hit time tonight was not until 9pm.......it rained briefly at 6pm.........they decided to call the show.........at 9pm it was crystal clear outside...........and nice and cool........and the show didn't happen.......T-bird is crestfallen..........an entire day spent in "we bout ta rock this mutha" mode........nervous energy out the wazoo..........for shit.........triple boos for all the consequences that conspired against our last show with a pregnant bass player.........booooo..........just fucking boo........
